Third African University on Youth Development: Day Two

January 12th, 2012 11:44 am

The day after the intercultural night. The African dances and the smell of Swiss chocolate is still with us, but we are starting with the process of mapping global youth work and structures. Maqueto Lopes representing Pan African Youth Union presented the African perspectives for the youth work, Rui Duarte from the European Youth Forum stressed the importance of the civil society in the global youth work and finally Camelia Nistor from the Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe.

Later on we were analyzing different documents concerning the youth participation: World Youth Conference Declaration, Declaration of Brada and a recent issue concerning the youth addressed to the United Nations. The whole afternoon was dedicated to support a successful networking among the organizations. WSCF was happy to find our partners from Pax Romana as well as Asosiacion de Universitarios Catolicos and work together on the interdenominational and interreligious dialogue.

We created a ‘space invasion’ that has shown that firstly we need a space for a discussion if we want to avoid misunderstanding. The participants were asked to create a large circle symbolizing the harmony and understanding. The connecting textile was a carpet made of newspapers (information as a medium to communicate) and people were trying to reach each other to talk. This has shown us, that it is possible to find our partners even if normally we might find it difficult to space for a safe sharing.

Pawel is working for WSCF as the Editor-in-Chief of the European Region’s publication ‘Mozaik’. He is studying Global Environmental Governance at the Free University in Amsterdam. He is representing WSCF at the week long Third African University on Youth Development in Cape Verde. We will continue to post his blog about his time there.
